Auto companies are making great strides in developing and producing advanced technology (hybrid; diesel) vehicles. These vehicles make up a growing portion of the car and light truck market. Most of these vehicles are still assembled in other countries. And all of the key components – the hybrid electric motors, diesel engines and other major parts – are still being built in other nations.
Urge Congress to enact legislation that would provide incentives to auto manufacturers and auto parts companies to encourage them to convert or expand existing facilities in the United States to produce advanced technology vehicles and their ke components. A number of bills have been introduced in the House and Senate by members of both parties that include this proposal.
- This proposal would help to create tens of thousands of automotive jobs for American workers.
- It would also help to accelerate the introduction of advanced technology vehicles, thereby improving fuel economy and the environment.
- This would reduce our dangerous dependence on foreign oil and improve our energy security.
- Consumers would benefit, both by reduced costs for advanced technology vehicles and by improved fuel economy.
